Abstract

Salt flats of the region of Ojo de Liebre Lagoon, a salt pond south of Laguna Mormona and Salina Ometepec, were studied in order to compare three areas showing active formation of evaporites in Baja California. The first two areas are on the Pacific coast of the peninsula, while the last one is located in the northwestern end of the Gulf of California. The stratigraphic context of these localities is analyzed to determine their Holocene paleogeographic history, and specially· the evolution of sea level for the last several thousand years. Transverse sections of the evaporitic basins show both vertical and lateral sequences of gypsum and halite deposits, and their relations with the substratum sediments. In OJo de Liebre complex, early diagenetic polyhalite is observed, either in nodules or in massive bed. The formation of anhydrite is confirmed in the Ometepec area, but in the saturated zone and not in the capillary zone, as mentioned previusly... In order to continue, download the full paper in PDF.
