Abstract

Precambrian to Tertiary rocks underlie most of the area east of Tuape in central Sonora. Precambrian rocks are divided into three units: San Isidro gneiss, El Tuti granite and Santa Margarita micrographic granite. Los Changos quartzite is assigned to the Paleozoic based upon its similarities with the Proveedora Formation that crops out in the Caborca region, although it could be younger or older.

The overlying volcanic rocks of probable Jurassic age are composed of well-bedded flows, breccias and volcaniclastic sediments, which in turn are covered by a Jurassic sedimentary sequence, divided into five units (A, B, C, D and E), on the basis of lithostratigraphic differences...
