Abstract
The area under study is in the Municipality of Tehuitzingo of the State of Puebla. The climate is warm with average annual temperature that ranges between 22°-26° C. The rainy season is in the summer and the average annual precipitation is 840 mm. The natural vegetation comprises deciduous plants and cacti. In the citrus and mango orchards there is noticeable chlorosis, which prompted to investigate the causes of tlus deficiency.
The soils can be classified within 5 series and 6 types, all of them are of alkaline nature, with low amounts of organic matter, little soluble salts and low fertility. The water for irrigation has high contents of soluble salts; therefore, it can be used only under very specific circunstances.
According to the information obtained in this study, it can be inferred that the soils need drainage as well as chemical compounds (gypsum, iron salts and chelates) in order to improve them. Also, it is neccesary to use rootstocks that can be propagated by vegetative means, which have been previously selected for saline conditions.
