Abstract
In this study, the published geomorphological investigations on northwestern Mexico, which include the Baja California peninsula and a large part of the state of Sonora, are evaluated. The analysis of 109 published works revealed that research began in the early 20th century with a notable increase in the 21st century. It was found that there is a notable disparity, with 80 studies focused on the Baja California peninsula (BCP) versus only 31 in Sonora. The most common topics are fluvial, tectonic, and coastal geomorphology, in addition to the evolution of relief in the Quaternary period. However, there are topics that are rarely addressed and studied, such as geomorphological mapping, environmental geomorphology, slope processes, and volcanic geomorphology, especially in the continental portion. The quantitative approach, which uses techniques such as cosmogenic radioisotopes, is more common and continuous in the BCP, while it is almost non-existent in Sonora. It is estimated that, although there is an increase in geomorphological research, the number of studies is still insufficient given the broad region that it comprises, especially for the continental portion and in the central and northern peninsular sectors. In the case of the continental portion, the need to increase the number of studies with robust quantitative methods that allow for estimating rates of erosion and ages of landforms and processes is also evident.
